Majority Leader and Member of Parlaiment for Vilimale’ Constituency, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has warned opposition Members, declaring that any no confidence motions on Parliament Speaker will be soundly defeated.

Nihan, the Parliamentary Group Leader for ruling PPM, made the statement in a tweet posted in Dhivehi Wednesday night. In his tweet, Nihan said PPM will defeat the no confidence motion on Maseeh. He said MDP and opposition members were deliberating on this move.

Though, Nihan had made this claim, neither MDP nor any opposition Member had initiated any formal proceedings to that effect. The last no confidence motion on the Speaker was put forward by PPM MPs loyal to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s PPM faction. Thimarafushi Constituency MP Mohamed Musthafa, a staunch proponent of the former President, had spearheaded the efforts then. However, the MPs had not carried out the motion.

Opposition MPs had given an indication that they may begin the proceedings. Reliable sources have reported to Raajje.mv that 10 MPs from the ruling PPM have already signed the no confidence motion on the Speaker.
