Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Zhang Lizhong has stated that assistance requested by the Maldives is ready and that efforts are underway to arrange transport for the materials.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Zhang Lizhong highlighted the Maldives support during China's time in need and stated that the Southeastern Asian nation is prepared to assist the Maldives.
As such, he announced that the donation materials are ready to be shipped and only requires transport.
Further, he stated that the province which the materials will arrive from will soon be shared with the Maldives' Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid.
While the Maldives temporarily halted direct flights from China to curb the spread of Covid-19, other international flights have also been cancelled. Thus, transporting goods from China is currently faced with many challenges.
In response to the Ambassador, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid expressed appreciation for China's efforts and recognised the obstacles caused by the disruption of international travel.
The Chinese Ambassador and minister Shahid has previously held discussions where the pair discussed a detailed list of vital items in assisting the Maldives in its fight against Covid-19.
This comes at a time when opposition members have continuously asserted that the delay in aid from China is due to the incumbent government rejecting assistance from the Southeastern Asian nation. Both the Ambassador and the government have denied these claims.
