Former Member of Parliament for the Central Maafannu constituency, Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonda), has stated that Maldivians have never historically allowed foreigners to own land in the country, and asserted that they will not permit such an opportunity within the Ras Male' project either.
Speaking during a special coverage by RaajjeTV, Rasheed raised concerns regarding the reported 99-year lease of a significant portion of Ras Male' to Eagle Hills. He questioned the valuation of the property's registration sale and noted that such real estate ventures could have been undertaken by the Maldivian government or local citizens themselves.
Rasheed stated that the public has a right to know the legal counsel and instructions provided to the government by Attorney General Ahmed Usham regarding this project, and insisted that the agreement must be disclosed. He further emphasized that granting a significant portion of Ras Male' to a foreign company is a serious matter concerning the nation's independence and sovereignty. He added that no Maldivian citizen has benefited from this transaction.
Furthermore, Rasheed stated that while efforts are underway to bring foreigners into a 500-hectare area, their identities remain unclear. He emphasized that since this matter directly impacts the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives, such proceedings must be conducted with full transparency.
Humanity has vanished from the world today. It has reached a point where even the slightest trace of compassion has disappeared like never before. While the actions of certain global leaders have already pushed the world into such a perilous state, those affiliated with them are now bringing foreigners to occupy a 500-hectare area right on the doorstep of Malé. We have no idea who is being brought in. Therefore, on a matter that raises such profound questions regarding the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives, this is an undertaking that must be conducted with absolute transparency.Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonda)
Rasheed stated that the transaction lacked transparency, asserting his belief that the current administration has sold off a territory through fraudulent means. He further reminded that previous governments in Maldivian history have been held accountable for similar actions.
