Authorities have decided to quarantine “all passengers arriving to Maldives by air except tourists"

Maldives is using the most of the recent tourist cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As such, 10 tourist facilities have been offered to the government for quarantine purposes, in addition to the Vilivaru facility.

Tourism Minister Ali Waheed on Sunday announced that 1158 rooms, which is a total of 2288 beds, have been secured as quarantine facilities.

The ten tourist facilities are; Biyaadhoo Island Resort, Fun Island Resort, Holiday Island, Hulhule’ Island Hotel, Malahini Kuda Bandos, Embudhu Village, Velidhoo Island Resort, Dhiggiri Tourist Resort, Royal Island and Varu by Atmosphere.

As per the Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s latest updates, there are currently over 300 people in quarantine facilities.

While the country has declared a public health emergency, the director general of public health issued a notice that “all passengers arriving to Maldives by air except tourists will be quarantined for 14 days at a place designated by the government” on Saturday.

This is one of the many measures the government has taken to curb a spread of the novel coronavirus in the country. While Maldives confirmed its positive cases on March 7, there have been a total of 13 cases. While all confirmed cases are foreigners -nine from Italy, one each from Germany, Turkey, United Kingdom and South Africa- three have since recovered.
