Coronavirus: Maldivian quarantined after return from China

Authorities continue to monitor individuals that travel from China

An additional Maldivian has been quarantined, over the possibility of carrying the deadly coronavirus infection.

While this individual does not have any symptoms, authorities continue to isolate and monitor those that return from China where the disease was first reported. As such, authorities said that any individual that is to have returned from the southeastern nation in the past 14 days will be quarantined and monitored.

Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, the government’s official spokesperson for all things coronavirus related, revealed last Thursday that three individuals that returned that day were being monitored despite no symptoms, as a precaution.

Furthermore, authorities also revealed that a total of 27 foreigners have been denied entry into the country since February 3, as a precaution to curb an outbreak in the Maldives.

While a total of seven individuals have been tested for the coronavirus, by sending samples to neighboring India as Maldives does not have the resources, their tests came negative. Furthermore, the seven individuals evacuated from Wuhan, China also tested negative; they were evacuated with India’s assistance and were quarantined at a dedicated facility in Manesar.

As part of the work to ensure that there in no outbreak in the Maldives, authorities have temporarily halted direct flights from China.

The Novel Coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China in December 2019.

The Maldivian government gifted one million tuna cans to China as a goodwill gesture and to assist the country during this difficult time, last week.
