Opposition calls to “put aside political differences and unite”, amid Covid-19 fears
PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdulla made the call at a press conference held on Sunday morning
The call comes after the government confirmed the first Covid-19 cases, late Saturday night
Raheem said that the opposition will "fully cooperate" in the work, adding that the president has been informed of this

The opposition has called to “put aside political differences and unite”, following the confirmation of the first two coronavirus cases in the Maldives.

President Abdul Raheem Abdulla of the coalition partner, People’s National Congress (PNC), made the call at a press conference held on Sunday morning; authorities confirmed that two individuals, foreign workers, tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday night.

Noting the “dangers” of the virus spreading, Raheem called for all to put aside their political differences and work together.

Using past governments as examples on how to handle such matters, the former parliamentarian highlighted actions taken during the cholera outbreak as well during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Further noting that the opposition coalition, comprising of PNC and former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), will “fully cooperate” in the work to safeguard the Maldivian people from Covid-19, adding that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih “has been informed of this”.

While Raheem also criticized that opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen, was summoned for questioning later on Sunday, the questioning session was later cancelled. However, a reason was not given.

The “Progressive Coalition” announced the decision to halt campaign activities for the upcoming local council and women’s development elections on Saturday, over coronavirus fears. Ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) followed suit, and are to continue campaign on social media.
