A one year and nine month old boy has died in a drowning accident at Funadhoo island of Shaviyani atoll.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Funadhoo Council Member Ali Khalid stated that the incident occurred at 3:30pm on Friday.

He revealed that the child's family lives near the beach and that the child had wandered off while his mother was in the bathroom doing her ablutions before prayer.

Upon finding the child missing, his mother had gone searching for him and discovered that he drowned, said Khalid.

Khalid further stated that the child was immediately taken to the hospital, however, doctors confirmed that the child had deceased.
