Adham Mohamed, the murderer of 59-yo taxi driver Gasim Hassan has been issued a one year sentence in an unrelated mugging case.

The judge presiding over the case, Judge Hassan Saeed, stated that the court finds Adham guilty of knowingly taking or exerting unauthorized control over the property of another as per section 211 (a.1) of the penal code and issued a sentence of one year and 12 days in prison.

Adham was given the one-year and 12-day sentence for stealing a motorbike parked in front of Dream Guest House on Rahdhebai Magu on 25th August 2016 with the help of a second person.

While the stolen motorbike was later found near the ferry terminal in Hulhumale', the contents in the under-seat storage of the bike was strewn in the wooded area near the Hulhumale' swimming track.

As such, the judge noted that Adham's confession during the preliminary stage of the trial was taken into account when issuing the verdict.

While Adham has finally been sentenced for a theft he committed four years ago, he has confessed to the murder of 59-year-old taxi driver Gasim Hassan. However, authorities state that his intent was not to kill Gasim, but to threaten him.

Authorities highlight that Adham has a criminal record ranging from theft, assault and mugging. Likewise, he is to have been under the influence on the night of the murder and had made repeated mugging attempts to pay for his addiction.

While Adham confessed to his crime during the police investigation, he also reiterated his confession at court as well when he had been brought in front of a judge to increase his remand period.

Many members of the public have voiced concern over the amount of repeat criminal offenders roaming freely within the society.

Gasim was found lying face-down in a puddle of blood on the road, on 4th December 2019.
