High Court’s representative at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), has resigned from the commission.

JSC’s secretary general confirmed this to RaajjeMV, saying that Judge Abdul Rauf Ibrahim has sent his resignation to the President’s Office.

The judge was elected as the High Court’s representative at JSC on 17th May 2017; this representative is elected through a vote by the court’s judges’ council. Rauf won the seat after beating out the court’s then-chief judge, Abdulla Didi.

While the JSC Act states that a representative must be elected within 30 days after the seat is vacated, Rauf was elected as the High Court representative seven months after his predecessor’s term ended.

The Judicial Service Commission comprises of the parliament speaker, a judge of the Supreme Court other than the chief justice, a judge of the High Court, a judge of the lower courts, a member of the people’s majlis, a member of the general public appointed by the People’s Majlis, the president of the Civil Service Commission, a person appointed by the president, the attorney general and a lawyer elected among the lawyers licensed to practice in Maldives.

Supreme Court's representative at the commission, Justice Abdulla Areef, resigned in November; he has since retired.
