Resolution calling to establish ‘national shipping line’ forwarded to committee
 
The resolution also seeks to introduce the Merchant Shipping Act
 
It was accepted with 73 votes on Wednesday

Parliament has accepted the resolution calling to form a national shipping line.

While the resolution was accepted on Wednesday with 73 votes, it has been forwarded to the Committee on National Development and Heritage for further review.

The aim of the resolution is to ensure national security and was submitted by Makunudhoo constituency MP Mohamed Raai. He noted that the increase in vessels and the subsequent increase in accidents as well as the need to conduct vessel surveys and to provide the necessary training to the Maldives Transport Authority officials that conduct these surveys.

The resolution also notes that the Seamen’s Book or the Seafarers Identity Document does not meet International Labour Standards on Seafarers, and highlighted serious security features.

Noting that this has been a serious security issue since 11th September 2000, the resolution highlights that this has caused various issues for seamen including possible fines.

Further noting that the Maldives depends on the sea, it further called to "restructure" the transport ministry, in order to provide the best services to the people.

The resolution also notes concerns of seamen, including being required to travel abroad to do medicals.

It also calls to train both sexes and provide the work experience, through joint programme's with friendly nations of under a government loan scheme.
