Council of Thinadhoo island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll has begun issuing the newly constructed housing units on the island.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Council President Ali Amjad revealed that the housing project initially began in 2014 and it was completed by 2016. By then, opportunity was opened for interested individuals to apply for the new housing units.
The council began issuing units to those who were selected through the applicants that had applied, on Wednesday.
While a total of 120 flats were constructed under the housing project, 105 flats were issued on Wednesday.
Although the remaining 15 units were initially to be sold, the council revealed that they will be distributing them to lucky draw winners after thorough discussions are held with the state.
80 units were issued to residents of the island and 25 were issued to residents of other islands who reside in Thinadhoo.
While former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed is currently on a tour across the southernmost atolls, he had participated in the event to distribute the housing units, and handed them over to some of the recipients.
The island Council went on to reveal that they followed a set of priorities when issuing flats and that those who do not currently have shelter, were prioritized followed by bigger families.
