Former President Mohamed Nasheed and British High Commissioner, James Dauris met on Tuesday.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed met with the British High Commissioner to the Maldives, James Dauris on Tuesday.

The High Commissioner revealed that he met with the former President, via twitter, on Tuesday evening.

He said that at the meeting, Nasheed told him “why it is important for Maldives that the local elections in April are fair for all parties’ candidates.”

The Local Council Elections, initially scheduled for January 14, was postponed by two months, in accordance to a ruling by the Civil Court. Civil Court made the ruling after one faction of the divided ruling Progressive Party of Maldives filed a case at court, saying it was "unable to prepare for the council elections due to internal conflicts".

Nasheed, who was sentenced to 13-years’ imprisonment in March 2015, traveled to Sri Lanka on Sunday, from the United Kingdom where he has been granted political asylum. He traveled to the UK in January 2016, after being granted permission to travel there for medical purposes.

He is currently in Sri Lanka, along with senior members of the opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). They have been holding a number of high-level meetings there, but is yet to disclose any details regarding the meetings.

In addition to Dauris, Nasheed met with the Ambassador of the United States to Maldives, Atul Keshap and Ambassador Jörn Rhode of Germany, on Tuesday.
