Famous business tycoon and leader of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), MP Abdulla Jabir has decided to retract his case against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, after “forgiving” him.
The Kaashidhoo constituency parliament member had filed a case at the Maldives Police Service (MPS) over the former president’s alleged failure to repay MVR 29 million borrowed from Jabir.
He submitted “evidence” against Gayoom last month.
However, Jabir has since decided to pardon the former president and retract the case.
He told RaajjeMV that this was his mother, Maryam Manik’s wishes, and added that this was due to her “close relationship” with Gayoom.
Jabir further said that he does not intend to take the former president to court, over the matter.
Also in September, the lawmaker refused to give a statement against Gayoom to police, saying that he will only give his statement in the presence of the former president.
While Jabir claims to have lent Gayoom MVR 29 million ahead of the 2018 presidential elections with interests, he denies this.
