The parliament accepted two motions at Wednesday's sitting; motion to provide housing for those without a permanent residence and newly married couples.
Both were forwarded to the Committee on National Development and Heritage, for further review.
Housing for those without a permanent residence
The motion concerning housing for those without a permanent residence was presented by Hoarafushi constituency MP Ahmed Saleem, and was accepted with the votes of 66 lawmakers.
Housing for newly married couples
The motion was presented to the parliament floor by the Baarah constituency MP Ahmed Abdulla, and accepted with 68 votes.
The motion was introduced with the objective of bringing the plight of relocating families to the government's attention and to speed up the process of providing housing from Male’ and nearby islands to those without a permanent residence.
The main highlights from this bill include a call for action to fast track the housing project based on housing needs, and establish regulations to artificially extend islands without enough space or lagoons to neighboring islands.
Additionally, the motion includes establishing regulations to provide housing for families without a permanent residence or families living in poor, inadequate living conditions as well as creating loans with a long repayment period.
