Ministry to "fully cooperate" with police in coach's sexual abuse case

The sports ministry noted that the case will be handled by the police "as this is a criminal case"

National cricket team’s coach, Asif Khan is being investigated for sexual abuse.

Sports Ministry confirmed this via a statement on Monday, noting it has been informed of such a case being lodged at the police and the cricket board.

The ministry highlighted that the even though the case involves a sports coach, that the case will be handled by the police “as this is a criminal case.”

However, the ministry added that it will fully cooperate with the police in the investigation.

Last Saturday, police announced that a 46-year-old South African citizen was detained at Velana International Airport over allegations of sexual assault; both against minors and adults.

While Khan arrested under a court order shortly after, he was released by the Criminal Court after the police failed to present him for remand hearing with the required 24 hours.

The cricket board has been subjected to scrutiny since the news broke, with some alleging that the board had attempted to cover up the coach's sexual abuse and send him off in a rush.
