HRCM learnt that 25 detainees are being held at the annex, during an inspection visit on Monday

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has ordered authorities to transfer all detainees at Malé Jail Annex, within 48 hours.

HRCM reached the decision over safety concerns at the remand jail.

The commission, in a statement released on Tuesday, noted that it had ordered the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) to shut down the annex at Malé Jail on April 11.

While MCS is to have informed HRCM after doing so on April 15, it learnt that 25 detainees were being held there during an inspection visit on September 23.

HRCM emphasized that the condition at the jail “is worse than before.”

Hence, the human rights body ordered MCS to transfer all 25 detainees to a safer zone within 48 hours.

HRCM ordered to shut down the annex at Malé Jail after declaring the place “unfit for humans.”
