Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been issued a 15-day remand.
The Criminal Court remanded Adeeb on Monday evening on the state’s request, claiming that he might attempt to escape the country again even if he is under house arrest.
Adeeb was earlier captured while attempting to escape to India by pretending to be a crewman on a tugboat. After he was returned to Maldives on Sunday night, Criminal Court initially released Adeeb after denying the request to issue an arrest order.
The police re-submitted the arrest-order request after making some procedural changes, and Adeeb was subsequently arrested on Monday morning.
While all of Adeeb’s prison sentences totaling 33 years have been overturned, the state has appealed his embezzlement case to the Supreme Court, and an appeal hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday morning.
