Bank of Maldives (BML) has stated that it does not keep records or images of cheques from other banks deposited to BML accounts.

In a press release on Tuesday, BML stated that their officials who were questioned by the parliament committee, over the MMPRC embezzlement case, had given factual information according to bank records.

BML stated that their internal audit of the cheques under MMPRC’s name deposited to SoF, the company involved in the embezzlement, relied on the bank records and that they did not keep records and images of cheques from other banks until they began clearing cheques with cheque imaging and truncation in November 2016.

BML stated that such records are kept at the banks where the cheques came from and that therefore BML has requested the banks to provide cheque copies relevant to the case.

BML also stated that it has begun another investigation after the BML officials’ meeting with the parliament committee, after new information on the cheques to the SoF account came to light, and that there have been misunderstandings regarding the information provided in the committee meeting and later via the BML official’s letter to parliament.

BML stated that it has always provided information for the MMPRC investigation, including the accounts SoF transferred money to and those who withdrew the money, adding that it is fully supportive of any effort to investigate and find the truth behind the MMPRC embezzlement.
