Reformist Movement's press conference in Maafannu Kunooz

The Reformist Movement has said that the Attorney General did not have the grounds to submit a motion to Supreme Court, whereby any sitting MP who defects or is removed or leaves their respective Party will lose their Parliamentary seat.

Speaking in the press conference held in Maafannu Kunooz, Thulusdhoo Constituency Member of Parliament, Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim said the Constitution was very clear on how a sitting Parliamentarian can lose his or her seat. Therefore, he argued that the Supreme Court cannot intervene in the issue. Any attempts to do so, MP Waheed said was an attempt to change the Constitution.

He added that as the law is clear on the matter, he did not believe that Supreme Court Justices would rule to the contrary.

In the same press conference, former Islamic Minister Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari said the incumbent Government had from the onset started their work by interfering into the judiciary, dating back to the 2013 elections. He said this had expanded to the rest of the institutions in the country.

Dr. Majeed also added the case sent to Supreme Court had no legal basis and that the law is clear on such issues.

The motion to Supreme Court was sent on Monday. Attorney General Mohamed Anil said that floor crossing was a betrayal of the mandates the Parliamentarians were elected on and of the Constituents.
