Lawyers who abide by the guidelines and regulations should no longer be fearful, says newly elected Bar Council President Maumoon Hameed.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee show on Sunday night, Hameed said that the Bar Council will conduct its work independently and remain free from outside influence.

Hameed said the establishment of the Bar Council has also allowed the legal profession to become independent, resulting in a freer environment for lawyers.

He said that the Bar Council should work to protect state attorneys, who have the risk of losing their jobs if they do not give into influence.

Highlighting previous incidents when lawyers were suspended for violating procedure, Hameed said that filing complaints should not be considered a violation.

Regarding the work of the Judicial Service Commission, Hameed said that upholding the quality of judges should have been done much earlier and that the Bar Council will voice its concern if the commission is found to be acting unlawfully.

While JSC’s election to appoint a lawyer’s representative is to be held on Saturday, Hameed said he has no interest in becoming a member since he has already been elected to carry out the duties of the Bar Council President.
