Elections Commission (EC) has opened the opportunity to run in the Bar Council election on July 13.
The recently ratified Legal Profession Act states that the executive committee of the Bar Council will consist of the President, Vice President, and six members.
Those running for the position of President or Vice President need to have 10 years of experience as a lawyer and those running for a member seat needs five years’ experience.
Only those with the license to practice law will be able to vote in the election.
At a press conference, EC President Ahmed Shareef said they have yet to publicize the list of lawyers due to errors and that ballot boxes will be placed in all the islands. He also said that, since the election was unscheduled, they are now working on the budget, which is estimated to be MVR 2 million.
The deadline to apply for the Bar Council election is July 5, 5am.
