Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has left on his medical trip to India.
He left from Velana International Airport with his wife on Friday morning.
Adeeb will be in India under the custody of three police officers and three corrections officers.
Before the correctional service’s medical board approved his trip, medical experts brought in to examine Adeeb recommended that he seek treatment abroad.
Responding to public criticism over the decision, Home Minister Imran Abdulla said that Adeeb will not be able to flee the authorities and that he is ready to take responsibility if it happens.
While Adeeb had been serving prison sentences totaling 33 years, all the verdicts have been overturned.
