No solution to registration of medical students

Maldivian medical students enrolled in University of Science and Technology have reported that their registration issues at the Bangladesh Dental and Medical Council remains unresolved.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, one student stated that Health Minister Abdullah Nazim had assured that a solution for the registration issues will be found as soon as possible. However, the student added that Health Ministry had not given a written document attesting to this pledge.

He added that the students had agreed on to continue protests until some form of reassurance was given in the form of an official document, attesting that a solution will be found. The students had also said they will not sit for exams until such a document was provided to them. The student reported that registration procedures were carried out until the end of January. However, as registration was not carried forth, the students had decided not to sit the exams. He also said the university had agreed to make special arrangements for them so they can sit the exams in April.

Without registrations, even if the students sit the exams, they will not be able to practice medicine.

A senior official at the Foreign Ministry said the registration issues had occurred not just for Maldivian students, but also for students from other countries.

The official added that Bangladesh’s Dental and Medical Council offered limited registrations every year. However, the Chittagong University Medical Council had offered registrations more than the slots they were allotted. He said the issues in registration was caused by this.

He said the Government was working in collaboration with authorities from India and other nations to resolve the issues.
