Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called to respect all religions.

Speaking at the Ihya forum held by the Islamic ministry on Thursday, the former president emphasized that the Holy Quran calls for unity among the people.

He further noted that it calls to respect all, and not just Muslims.

Noting that this is what the Prophet did, the former president said that “instead of trying to look or dress like him, we should learn from the Prophet’s actions.”

He added that we should refrain from acting against non-Muslims, and that the Prophet’s Sunnah shows that he did not discriminate any race, religion or nation.

The former president went on to narrate a story about the Prophet, and how he dealt with a Jewish woman who wanted to harm him. Maumoon noted that despite her intentions, that the Prophet treated her with respect and kindness.

“This is what we should learn,” he added.
