Court remands suspects arrested in Monday's drug bust

149kg of drugs were confiscated in an operation on Monday, estimated to be worth MVR 260 million

The five suspects arrested in a major drug bust on Monday, have been remanded by the Gahdhoo Island Court in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll.

While one of them was remanded by 10 days, the remaining are to be kept in detention until the trial concludes.

A 72-hour operation in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll by the Maldives Police Service (MPS)’s Criminal Investigation Unit, together with the Divisional Policing Command and Drug Intelligence Unit, led to the seizure of nearly 150kg of drugs on Monday, estimated to be worth over MVR 260 million.

Police said that drugs, heroin and cannabis, were "trafficked via sea,” and that they were found buried on an inhabited island- Hulhuvaarulu- in the atoll.

Commissioner of Police, Mohamed ‘MC’ Hameed applauded the officers that handled the “very successful” operation, via Twitter on Monday night.
