The Prosecutor General filed the appeal at the Supreme Court on Monday

The state has appealed the High Court’s order to unfreeze former President Abdulla Yameen’s bank accounts.

RaajjeMV understands that the Prosecutor General filed the appeal at the Supreme Court on Monday.

The High Court reversed the Criminal Court’s order to freeze Yameen’s eight accounts at the Maldives Islamic Bank on Sunday.

Authorities have stated that the accounts held state money which were obtained from island leases via Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The accounts were frozen after the state raised concern that the money could be used for personal gain.

Yameen appealed at the High Court, claiming that it violates article 73 of the criminal procedure act and article 24 of the constitution.

The High Court unfroze Yameen’s account after ruling that the order violated Articles 72 and 73 of the criminal procedure act.
