Maldives is seeking India's assistance, in the construction of a cricket stadium.

This was revealed in the joint statement released following Indian External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj's visit to the Maldives.

The request was made while discussing cooperation in the field of youth and sports, with Minister Swaraj agreeing "to positively consider the request."

RaajjeMV understands that the cricket stadium is to be developed in the reclaimed phase II area in the capital's suburban district, with a credible source informing that "land has already been allocated for the project."

Back in January, during Sri Lankan ambassador A.B. Thoradeniya's visit to the Maldives, Vice President Faisal Naseem had sought the country's assistance in developing cricket in Maldives.

In addition, in a move to popularize the sport in the country, youth and sports ministry had last month held a special match last month, in collaboration with the Indian Embassy and cricket Board of Maldives.

Indian international cricketeers- Yuvraj Singh and Nikhil Chopra- took part in the match, along with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and VP Naseem.
