Transport Ministry will on Sunday begin enforcing wearing helmets on roads that allow speeds of more than 30 kilometers per hour.

Deputy Transport Minister Shimaaz Ali told RaajjeMV on Saturday that authorities will be enforcing the new regulation on the Sinamale’ bridge, Addu City’s Link Road, and the Laamu Atoll Link Road.

The Ministry earlier held courses to familiarize drivers with the new regulation and the government has also given out 5,000 helmets as part of its 100-day plan.

People on two-wheeled vehicles (classes A1 and A0) are required to wear helmets with chin straps and un-tinted and transparent screens that identifies the driver.

Starting from April 1, first-time offenders will be fined MVR 500, second-time offenders will be fined MVR 750, and fined MVR 1,000 for each offense afterwards.
