Maldive Gas has revealed that it had spent MVR 2.5 million on former First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim’s mosque during her husband, President Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
On August 20, last year, then President Yameen inaugurated Masjid-ul Waali-dain in Hulhumale’, built in the memory of the former first lady's parents.
Shazail Shiyam, Managing Director of Maldive Gas, said that the material needed for the mosque’s construction was acquired after claiming it as equipment needed for the gas plant in Thinadhoo and that none of the material ever reached the plant.
He said that there are documents showing that over MVR 2.5 million was spent on the mosque under Maldive Gas’ name.
Highlighting that the Thinadhoo gas plant is still being built, Shazail said that the company has given out money to various groups in the name of corporate social responsibility.
Abdulla Maumoon, the MD of Maldive Gas during Yameen’s administration, was a close friend of Fathimath Ibrahim. Shazail said that the information they have received so far suggest that Abdulla Maumoon was handling the company’s field work at the time.
He said that they will find out more about the company’s mismanagements as the current audit of Maldive Gas continue.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is also investigating Maldives Gas’ involvement in the construction of the mosque.
Yameen’s administration has also been accused of using Maldive Gas for Sadaqat Foundation circumcision camp in Hulhumale’ and Yameen’s re-election campaign. Sadaqat Foundation is a charity NGO run by Fathmath Ibrahim.
