Four individuals who were defeated in the party primary election are contesting in the upcoming parliamentary election as independents, states the Elections Commission.
Commission member Ahmed Akram said on Monday that these individuals are: former MP Abdulla Jabir, who is contesting for Kaashidhoo constituency, Mohamed Abdulla, contesting for Ihavandhoo constituency, Mohamed Abdul Kareem, contesting for the south-Henveiru constituency, and Ahmed Mohamed, contesting for a constituency in Hithadhoo.
The Elections Commission allowed for individuals who have contested and lost in an official primary election to submit applications for candidacy after a Supreme Court decision on a case filed by former MP Jabir.
Prior to the decision, it was barred for those that have lost a bid for a ticket to contest in proceeding national elections.
