MDP refutes speculation over presidential primary vote

A date is to be decided by the party's national assembly.

Niyaz said primary votes would be inclusive.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is currently engaged in strengthening party administration and policies, and will hold unchallengeable primary polls, which former President Mohamed Nasheed will contest in, said the party’s Deputy Chairperson Ali Niyaz.

Niyaz refuted speculation that MDP would not hold party primaries for the presidential elections, and said that ballots would be as inclusive as possible.

“I see no reason to rush for the primary elections, it will happen and a date will be decided by the national assembly and any interested candidate is welcome to contest” Niyaz continued “Right now, we are more concerned with building the party’s foundations, strengthening our members, and harnessing support”.

Further addressing speculation, Niyaz said news sources under government influence are keen on spreading rumors about the MDP, and added that reports of internal discord and despotic tactics within the party are false.

While the self-exiled opposition leader has always maintained that he would return to the Maldives by 2018, he had announced his intention to contest the presidential elections last week. At a press conference held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Nasheed had welcomed President Abdulla Yameen’s rivalry.

Niyaz said that party would do everything it can to smoothen this process.

“Our national assembly has voted to put forth another candidate if the elections commission does not accept Nasheed’s candidacy” Niyaz said, and expressed confidence that international actors would support him.
