A parliament representative of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is seeking to summon Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)’s Governor, Ahmed Naseer, to parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions for questioning.

A request sent in by Galolhu-North constituency MP Eva Abdulla to the chair of the Committee on Tuesday, asks to summon the governor for questioning over his actions after the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) lodged cases against then President Abdulla Yameen, at the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Maldives Police Service.

Naseer is to have dismissed the FIU’s head, shortly after the unit lodged the cases. FIU is run under MMA.

ACC publicized its report on the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement last Thursday.

Noting that MMA had neglected to take action in the matter, ACC has decided to seek charges against some senior officials there.

Furthermore, the Commission noted that FIU’s report “clearly” shows the suspicious transactions between MMPRC and SOF, the private company used in laundering money from the state. However, ACC said that matter was not reported to authorities as the FIU’s work was halted through “influence.”
