Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that those who benefited from acts of corruption are still as powerful as ever, camouflaging themselves at the highest levels of government.
Dr. Jameel said this in a series of tweets on Thursday night after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) publicized its investigative report into the alleged embezzlement of over a billion dollars through Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) in 2015, during Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
Dr. Jameel, who was removed as Yameen’s first vice president, praised incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s swift action regarding the scandal and said any deal done through MMPRC did not benefit the people must be immediately terminated.
He said that the MMPRC case is just the tip of the iceberg and that other major cases of corruption took place in the past years, which had destroyed Maldives’ democratic institution and constitutional system. This includes the implementation of disastrous laws and amendments and the removal of the elected Vice President, he said.
He added that ‘Zero Tolerance’ can only be a concrete policy if meaningful action is taken against everyone involved regardless of their influence or political affiliations.
