President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent condolences to the parents of eight-year-old Rawshan Jian, who died of injuries sustained after a loaded cement bag fell on top of her while walking in capital Malé City.
While the incident occurred on Sunday morning, her family on Monday confirmed her death.
In a tweet sent out on Monday, President Solih- who is currently on a state visit in India- sent condolences to her parents who are both doctors from Bangladesh working in Nilandhoo island of Faafu atoll, emphasizing that “there is no greater sadness than the passing of a child’s life.”
He added, “may we all learn from this terrible tragedy and resolve to enforce stronger safety measures.”

Rawshan Jian’s parents revealed that she passed away at around 12:45pm, while undergoing treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
She was in serious condition since, and had to undergo two operations.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said that it has launched a serious investigation into the incident.
President Solih on Sunday ordered the “immediate review of safety procedures, and inspection of all construction sites in Malé, so that more stringent measures may be put in place for the safety of workers and the general public.”
The incident has caused public outrage, over “years of recklessness and negligence” by construction companies.
