Elections Commission (EC) has stated that the campaign financial reports of both presidential candidates are questionable.
EC chief Ahmed Shareef said that the financial reports of former President Abdulla Yameen and current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are similar but that he will not disclose any details since they are still evaluating them.
Presidential candidates are required to send a financial report of their campaign costs to the EC within 60 days after election day.
EC chief Shareef said that both candidates submitted their reports within the deadline and that they will be contacting the candidates’ agents this week for more information for the evaluation, after which the EC will publicize their report.
RaajjeMV understands that Yameen’s report to EC stated that he spent MVR 22.5 million on his re-election bid.
After Yameen was questioned on corruption allegations on Saturday, the police stated that they have frozen his accounts, which has over MVR 100 million.
