Supreme Court has on Thursday overturned the 2015 corruption conviction of former Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Nazim.

While Nazim was sentenced to life in prison in April 2015, Supreme Court overturned his conviction at Thursday’s hearing.

The former lawmaker was sentenced to 25 years in jail on corruption charges, over defrauding the state of MVR 1.4 million (USD 91,400) by submitting bids on behalf of non-existent companies.

He was granted medical leave and traveled to Singapore on December 11, 2015. He had been living in self-exile since.

Back in November, Supreme Court issued a stay order on enforcing his sentence until it concluded reviewing his case.

He returned to Maldives shortly after.
