Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has stated that they have recovered the embezzled USD 1 million from former President Abdulla Yameen.
The money is related to the Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC) scandal which saw the embezzlement of over USD 1 billion from the state during Yameen’s administration.
Yameen has admitted to receiving some of the stolen money, but pleaded ignorance of where it had come from when he accepted it and blamed his vice president Ahmed Adeeb of being behind the scandal.
Speaking at the parliament’s public finance committee on Monday, ACC president Hassan Luthufee said that have transferred the USD 1 million to one of ACC’s accounts.
Luthufee declined to give the exact date they received the money, since the investigation is ongoing and said that progress in the case is slow since many of those allegedly involved have fled the country.
He said that they have been unable to get the suspects back to Maldives for questioning despite issuing a red notice via Interpol.
The Interpol has issued red notices for Hussain Mohamed, Ishfah Ali, Ahlam Latheef, Wisham Mohamed, and Aseel Ahmed.
