By-elections for six vacant parliament seats will not be held: Elections Commission
The commission revealed this in a tweet on Thursday
Constituencies now vacant are Hinnavaru, Kaashidhoo, north-Henveiru, north-Mahchangoalhi, south-Galolhu, and Laamu atoll’s Gan

The Elections Commission of the Maldives has said that by-elections for six parliamentary seats recently made vacant, will not be held.

The commission revealed this in a tweet on Thursday.

Constituencies now vacant are Hinnavaru, Kaashidhoo, north-Henveiru, north-Mahchangoalhi, south-Galolhu, and Laamu atoll’s Gan.

Parliamentarians representing said constituencies had resigned from their seats in the People’s Majlis before being appointed to various positions in Maldives’ newly formed government.

  • President Ibrahim Solih – represented the Hinnavaru constituency
  • Vice President Faisal Naseem – represented the Kaashidhoo constituency
  • Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid – represented the north-Henveiru constituency
  • Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi – represented the north-Mahchangoalhi constituency
  • Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof – represented the south-Galolhu constituency
  • Economic Development Minister Fayyaz Ismail – represented Gan constituency

The tenure of current sitting parliamentarians, who were elected in 2014, will expire next year.
