HC overturns ex-magistrate's conviction
He was sentenced to 17 years in prison on June 16, 2016 after being found guilty of forging an arrest warrant for then-president

High Court has on Wednesday overturned former Magistrate Ahmed Nihan’s conviction on terrorism charges.

He was sentenced to 17 years in prison on June 16, 2016 after being found guilty of forging an arrest warrant for then-President Abdulla Yameen.

While the hearings on his appeal case concluded in October, High Court on Wednesday ruled that he was convicted “unlawfully”.

The ruling further stated that there is no proof of anyone attempting to arrest the president, as the alleged arrest warrant was incomplete.

Along with Nihan, former prosecutor general Muhuthaz Muhsin was also convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 17 years.

Both were transferred from prison to house arrest earlier this week, as per President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s pledge to free all political prisoners.
