High Court overturns MP Abdulla Riyaz's acquittal, finds him guilty of obstruction

The Criminal Court acquitted Riyaz of the charges in July 2017

The High Court has on Tuesday overturned a lower court ruling and found opposition aligned lawmaker Abdulla Riyaz to be guilty of the obstruction charges put forth against him.

The court had scheduled a hearing for the case at 11:15am on Tuesday, after state prosecutors appealed his acquittal.

The Criminal Court acquitted Riyaz of the charges in July 2017. Riyaz is accused of obstructing the conduct of a law enforcement officer through refusing to provide access to his mobile phone.

The lawmaker is currently in detention as well, after having been apprehended at an opposition rally in capital city Malé.  Riyaz has been remanded until sentencing.
