The local government council in Dhidhdhoo island of Haa Alif atoll has said that it rejects the government’s list of flat recipients.
The council unanimously agreed that it would not be accepting the ministry’s list of flat recipients, under the state’s ‘Hiyaa’ program, on the basis that previous units allocated for residents of the island have not been given.
The council has asked the ministry to suspend the process of allocating flats to recipients they shortlisted, and maintained that they will not be providing any support to the program ‘until justice in the matter is attained’.
They have also demanded that the ministry deem the entire process of allocation to have been unfair and to publicly declare it void. If the ministry refuses, the council has threatened to file a case over the matter with the High Court.
The Dhidhdhoo island council has formed a reputation for vocal opposition. Council members were earlier this year suspended for demanding that the government enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling to release unfairly detained opposition leaders.
