No obstacles to Naseem, Akram and Sofwan returning to Maldives: Immigration

A number of opposition politicians have been living in self exile since President Abdulla Yameen assumed power in 2013

There are no obstacles to former foreign minister Ahmed Naseem and former state minister Akram Kamaaludeen returning to the Maldives, says Maldives Immigration.

A senior immigration official told RaajjeMV that their passports have been released, along with that of Ahmed Sofwan, personal secretary of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Noting that their passports were released recently, the official asserted that there are no obstacles to them returning to the country.

However, if they are to travel back, they are to go to the Maldives embassy in whichever country they are currently at, and obtain the required travel documents.

“They will not be questioned any further,” added the official.

Their passports were cancelled after failing to present themselves to police despite summons, with the Immigration saying that this obstructs investigations.

Naseem was summoned to police on August 13, 2016, while Akram was summoned on August 4, 2016. Sofwan was summoned in May 2017, and the police had also sought the assistance of Interpol in arresting him.

All three have been residing in neighboring Sri Lanka.

A number of opposition politicians have been living in self exile since President Abdulla Yameen assumed power in 2013, and some have since returned following his loss at this year’s presidential election.
