Maldives Police Service (MPS) says that all suspects in the brutal murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed are now in police custody “despite the various obstacles in the investigation”.

In a statement issued on Monday, police said that they have been using all their resources in the investigation into Yameen's murder, and that all suspects in the murder are now in captivity.

Noting that it has acquired enough evidence to prove the case against those in their custody, police said that they are now conducting the necessary work to send them for prosecution.

Furthermore, police noted that there were obstructions to the investigation since the beginning, ‘from those who attempted to change focus of the case, individuals releasing information regarding attack, lawyers, as well as international parties’.

Police further said that despite the obstructions, it worked to find the culprits in Yameen’s murder, reassuring that they will “do all the necessary work to bring the perpetrators to justice”.

Police had on Sunday denied rumors that the suspects in Yameen’s murder were being abused in police custody.

Maldives democracy Network (MDN) had received reports that the detainees were being “held in unauthorised place without access to lawyer”.

“Reports of torture and inhumane treatment to those detained. It poses a threat to delivery of justice and admissible evidence”, said MDN.

The slain writer’s family has filed a case against the police at Civil Court, seeking to prove police negligence in Yameen’s murder ‘by failing to provide him protection’ despite the multiple death reports that were reported to the institution.

Seven suspects have been arrested in connection to Yameen's murder, police had previously revealed.
