The United States’ National Security Council (NSC) has congratulated Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for winning the 2018 Maldives’ presidential election.

In its official twitter account on Wednesday, the NSC stated that the US looks forward to strengthening their partnership with Maldives to promote security, prosperity, and democracy.

On Tuesday, the US Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) also congratulated Solih, who was the presidential candidate of the opposition coalition in the September 23 election, adding that it looks forward to working with his government.

Solih won the election with 58.4% of the votes against President Abdulla Yameen, who received 41.6%.

President Yameen, who initially accepted defeat, is now holding protests and claiming that the election was rigged.
