Scores of people have queued up at the Dharubaaruge premises in capital city Malé to file applications for flats to be given away under the state’s ‘Hiyaa’ housing project.
Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu has said that all applicants that file before the 30th of September will receive flats.
While only 7,000 flats are to be given out under the project, over 18,000 individuals have applied. Minister Muizzu said that the government is working to provide flats for the remaining applicants as well.
The Hiyaa project was opened for applications months ago and the initial deadline was set for July 31st, which was then extended for the end of August.
The deadline was extended again for the end of September.
In early August, the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure also began releasing application forms for their ‘Hiyaa Accomplished’ project, which offers flats developed in reclaimed space on Kaafu atoll.
The ministry will be issuing 1,000 square feet of flats developed on Fushi Dhiggaru island and the ‘Villimalé Phase 2’, which is reclaimed space on Gulhifalhu island.
