Former Attorney General Husnu Al Suood has said that he does not want to see the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) headed by politicians.
Suood stated this via a tweet following Member of Parliament for Guraidhoo constituency Ibrahim Riza’s appointment to the post of Vice President at the commission.

Riza was appointed as VP to the JSC, which is tasked with appointing judges, investigating complaints against them, formulating regulations on judges, advising the President and parliament on matters relating to the administration of justice as well as other matters of the court, after a secret vote taken by the commission.
However, the other candidates or the results of the vote have not been revealed.
Riza was appointed after Mohamed Faisal, who was also the President’s representative as well as VP at the commission, was appointed to the High Court’s bench of judges.
Riza’s appointment had drawn heavy criticism from the public due to his active involvement in President Abdulla Yameen’s campaign activities.
As per the Maldives Constitution, the Judicial Service Commission comprises of 10 members, and it currently comprises of Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, Attorney General Mohamed Anil, Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Areef, president of the civil service commission Dr. Ali Shameem, Juvenile court judge Mohamed Easa, High Court judge Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, attorney Abdul Hannaan Ahmed, attorney Latheef Qasim, and attorney Mohamed Saleem.
