While Defence Minister Adam Shareef has said that the military and police are on high alert due to threats to national security, former Speaker of Parliament has called on President Yameen to share details with the relevant parliament committees, if threats are 'genuine'.
The defence minister, via his Facebook page, announced that the military has been receiving reports that some are working to create unrest in the country 'in the coming days' and that both the military and police are on alert and closely monitoring these threats.
Following the announcement, the Henveiru-North constituency MP noted that 'many are skeptical' of the said threats that come weeks prior to the presidential elections slated for September 23.
"If genuine, Yameen must share details of threat with Parliament National Security Committee and 241 Committee", Shahid added.
Minister of Defence on FB announces ”reports of a plot to create disturbances” & places MNDF & Police on high alert. With Presidential elections round the corner, many are skeptical. If genuine, Yameen must share details of threat with Parliament National Security Cmte & 241 Cmte.

The manner in which the announcement was made, via a Facebook page with less than 2,000 likes at the time, has received criticism while former President Mohamed Nasheed said that President Yameen will resort to anything to disrupt September's ballots.
