Maldives' ex-president calls to establish a 'new' Elections Commission
The former president called on President Yameen to hold discussions with all parties and establish a Commission that all can agree to

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called on incumbent President Abdulla Yameen to establish a new Elections Commission 'that can be trusted'.

The self-exiled former president said this in a tweet posted in Dhivehi on Tuesday, calling on President Yameen to hold discussions with all political parties and to establish a new Commission.

"Prior to the presidential elections, I call on President Yameen to hold discussions with all political parties and establish an Election Commission that all can agree to, and can be trusted", reads his tweet.

Nasheed's call comes at a time when the Commission has been facing multiple allegations, including working with the government in order to ensure a win for the incumbent President.

In addition, the opposition maintains that it is 'impossible' to hold a free, fair and inclusive election with the current Elections Commission, noting that current Commissioner Ahmed Shareef had been part of President Yameen's 2018 re-election campaign until his appointment in March 2018.
