Former President Mohamed Nasheed and the opposition coalition’s presidential candidate, MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has congratulated Kaashidhoo MP Faisal Naseem on becoming the running mate.
Faisal was elected as the running mate of the opposition coalition parties at the Jumhooree Party (JP) council meeting on Friday night.
Faisal won with 15 votes in the secret ballot while Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain received 14.
In a tweet after the ballot, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Nasheed congratulated Faisal and expressed his hope that together they would be able to defeat President Abdulla Yameen by a huge margin.
The Joint Opposition’s presidential candidate Solih, elected by MDP, also congratulated Faisal on Twitter and said that, having worked closely with him in Parliament, he was “assured of his commitment to restore democracy Maldives.”
Now that JP has elected Faisal as the opposition’s running mate, the coalition parties will now begin their campaign for September’s election in earnest.
