Ali Solih, the Jumhooree Party’s spokesperson, has called on the public to refrain from engaging in slanderous speech regarding the Joint Opposition’s running mate.

While parties in the Joint Opposition have agreed to appoint a running mate from the Jumhooree Party, Solih said on Wednesday that there have been anti-campaigning happening on social networking platforms that are immensely slanderous.

Solih said that such speech and rhetoric not only attacks individual people but impacts the unity within the country and the Joint Opposition, in the case of their supporters.

While the party is to announce a running mate to be on the same ticket as the Maldivian Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih next Tuesday, names of a number of members of the party have been posted on social media.

These potentials include Kendhoo constituency MP Ali Hussain, Kaashidhoo MP Faisal Naseem, former minister Abdulla Mausoom, former minister Abdulla Kamaaluddeen, former minister of state Abdulla Ameenaa, former state minister Mohamed Fayaaz, party secretary-general Ahmed Sameer, and party leader Qasim Ibrahim’s wife Aishath Nahulaa.

Qasim, Solih and party president Ali Waheed have all endorsed Nahulaa for vice presidency.
